Festival Taurino Solidario a favor de los afectados por la DANA en Letur
The town of Letur, located in the Sierra de Segura (Albacete), was severely affected by the Dana storm at the end of October, suffering significant material and agricultural losses. To support its recovery, the Albacete bullring will host a charity bullfighting festival on 22nd February, with all proceeds going towards rebuilding this Manchegan town.
Letur is perhaps the most overlooked village among those devastated by the catastrophic Dana storm that swept through Spain at the end of October. Nestled in the Sierra de Segura in the province of Albacete—away from the Levantine areas where the most publicised damage occurred—this Manchegan town was far from spared. On the contrary, alongside the tragic loss of six lives, the material destruction has been immense.
At least 13 buildings were destroyed by the flooding, 22 severely damaged, and 33 further affected, according to official figures provided by the Castilla-La Mancha regional government. Furthermore, Letur’s agricultural land—spanning over 3,000 hectares—has been left almost unusable, particularly its olive groves. Losses are estimated at 286 tonnes of olives, with the overall harvest expected to drop by 30%.
The president of the Castilla-La Mancha government, Emiliano García-Page, has predicted that it will take four years for Letur to fully return to normal, with full rehabilitation of the area unlikely before 2028.
Support has already begun pouring in, and as always, the world of bullfighting has not lagged behind. Albacete’s bullring, the capital of the province, has organised a charitable bullfighting festival to aid those affected. Scheduled for 22nd February, the event will feature a star-studded line-up of today’s top bullfighters, alongside the participation of talented matadors from the local area, a land renowned for producing exceptional bullfighting professionals.
The impressive line-up includes rejonador Diego Ventura, matadors Enrique Ponce, José María Manzanares, Alejandro Talavante, and José Fernando Molina, the young novillero Marco Pérez, and Alejandro González from the Albacete Bullfighting School. They will face bulls generously donated by various breeders.
The festival will begin at 4:30 p.m., with all proceeds from this special event—organised by UTE Casas-Amador, the company managing Albacete’s bullring, in collaboration with the City Council—going towards the recovery and reconstruction of Letur. This town, torn apart by the Dana storm on 29th October, urgently needs your support to rise again.
